Artist Sonia O’Mara was born and raised in California by an artist father and a business entrepreneur mother. After graduating from UCLA, she moved to New York City to immerse herself in the arts, and acquire a Master’s degree from NYU in Arts Administration. She began her career working at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, before moving into the art gallery world; first at the Leo Castelli Gallery and finally at The Nancy Hoffman Gallery. During this time she began studying painting at The National Academy at night. Eventually she segued into painting full time, and has made it her life’s work, showing at various galleries both in New York and her home state of California.
While Sonia has traveled extensively, it is the urban poise of New York City that caught her heart. And although she chose Long Island City for her studio, she is just as likely to be found painting in the French countryside as she is on the bustling city streets of Manhattan. Her ability to see and celebrate the beauty and even humor, not only of a serene landscape, but also of everyday objects, has made her a sought after artist whose work graces the walls of many private collectors worldwide.
