About the Artist

Self-Portrait by Sonia O'MaraOriginally a native of California, I began studying art at UCLA in the late nineteen eighties. After graduating I moved to New York City and received a Master of Arts degree from NYU.

I then began my intensive study of traditional painting methods with artist Sam Adoquei at the National Academy of Art in New York City, coupled with intensive training in his studio Atlelier program.

Along the way I studied painting in Paris at the Paris American School of Fine Art, and the Arts Students League in New York City. My studies have involved very traditional old master techniques with an emphasis on drawing, and working from life.

In 2003 I was approached by Bryan Batt and Tom Cianfichi to create a New Orleans toile for their store Hazelnut on Magazine Street. Working in collaboration with them I researched scenes from around New Orleans. I then created drawings of landmarks and my own original scenes. This artwork was then turned into an award-winning toile pattern that has been featured in The New York Times and several national design magazines.

Today I live in New York City and maintain a studio in Union Square. The studio is open to the public by appointment only. I accept commissions on all subject matter. All prices available by request.
